A morning adventure

A calm sunrise over Presqu'ile
We awoke to just the sort of precious morning that we had wanted. There it was right in front of us, a glassy smooth Lake Ontario, ready to be glided over in our unsinkable and almost untippable new kayak. We needed these windless and waveless conditions on the lake to build up our courage to try it out. My husband and I have boated (power, sail, row and canoe) but this was the first try at kayaking. You can only learn so much by reading how-to books and googled information before you just have to wade in the coldish water and do it! We had our whistle, bailer, lifejackets and now the perfect weather! We were ready! As experienced shore explorers we had lived here four summers and only a couple of times seen this area from the water. The kayak was heavier than we expected but we came up with a half-carry and half-drag approach down to the shore.
After a less than graceful scramble into position we tentatively pushed off. We were surprised at the easy way we moved through the water. We laughed as we inadvertently splashed ourselves with then paddles and found our seats now in puddles. We marveled how we were able to sneak up on the water birds. We slowed down to peer through the clear water to the sandy and rocky bottom hoping to see some fish or other water creatures. We were fascinated by the different perspective provided by the slow, from-the-water view of this very familiar area. We were in awe of the natural scene before us. Too soon, our backs were sore and our arms aching. So we returned invigorated by our wet adventure but eager to try again the next calm day! We encourage our guests to bring their favourite water craft and have fun exploring too!
