Saturday, March 17 and Sunday, March 18
March brings the return of the waterfowl and our Waterfowl Weekend. This year we will be presenting a much larger program with activities at the Nature Centre, Lighthouse Interpretive Centre and of course our migrating visitors on the Bay. The activities and times are as follows: Nature Centre – open 10am to 4pm (no bathrooms available here)
Carving Display – You will have to look twice when you enter the Nature Centre, these beautiful wood carvings provided by Quinte Carvers and Gary McPherson look just like the real thing.
Taxidermy Display – This is the perfect way to get an up close look at the waterfowl we are seeing through the scopes. Steve Dingman, of Feathers & Down Taxidermy, is providing beautiful mounted waterfowl for all of us to enjoy.
Henry’s Camera Display – Henry’s will be set up with lenses and ready to talk photography with you. Let the inner wildlife photographer out and discover how you can get started in this wonderful hobby.
Kids Activities and Crafts – Take part in the Wacky Waterfowl Trivia Hunt, if you hunt down all the Waterfowl facts you get a PRIZE. Also, discover how ducks are banded and you can get banded too. There will be lots of different crafts, colouring sheets, activity sheets, and displays for you to discover the Wonderful World of Waterfowl.
Photography Display – Local photographer, Garnet McPherson, will be there to show you his art and will have an informal presentation to demonstrate how photography brings you closer to nature.
How YOU can help Waterfowl – Do you have ducks, geese or swans living in your backyard or property? This will show you how you can make a difference.
The New World of Birding – This will demonstrate how you may already have the tools to start birding. You don’t need to invest in several books to get started anymore.
Lighthouse Centre – open 10am to 4pm (indoor washrooms available here)
Gift Shop – The Friends of Presqu’ile Gift Shop will be open to purchase that perfect souvenir to bring home.
Gallery – Also, make sure you check out the back Gallery. It is filled with wonderful displays about Presqu’ile’s storied past.
Meet the Artists – Join Jim Brown and Sherrie Greig as they show their art. Jim Brown is a local photographer and poet who will be there to talk to about his wonderful pieces. Sherrie will so be showing photography, drawings and paintings, she will also be demonstrating her skills as she creates a new masterpiece before your eyes.
Friends of Presqu’ile BBQ – From 11am to 2pm, the Friends will be serving up mouth- watering burgers, sausages, and more. There will also be hot and cold drinks and goodies for sale.
Bushnell Rep – The Bushnell Rep, Dave Richards, is at the Lighthouse Centre once again and will have his scopes and binoculars for you to check out.
Raffle Tickets – Do not miss the chance to win a scope and tripod or a set of binoculars, both donated by Bushnell. Ticket prices are one for $2, three for $5, or ten for $10. Draw will take place at the end of Warblers and Whimbrels Weekend, at 4pm on Sunday, May 20.
Viewing Platform #1 – Outside, beside the lighthouse, you will stumble on Viewing Platform #1. You will find some wonderful volunteers who will help you with the telescopes and identifying the many ducks you will find in the icy waters.
Calf Pasture Volunteers from 10am to 4pm (outdoor washrooms available here)
Viewing Platform #2 – There is another Viewing Platform right at the end of Calf Pasture, which is located down Atkins Lane. You will find more of those wonderful waterfowl, such as Swans, Redheads, Canvasbacks, and Scaup. There will also be volunteers here to help you with the telescopes and identifying the ducks
