Vancouver is considering turning parts of Commercial Drive, Point Grey Road and Cornwall Avenue into bikeways as part of the next phase of its quest to reduce bicycle-vehicle conflicts.

With four of the city’s 20 highest-crash intersections for cyclists sited on those three roads, it makes sense to look at a variety of ways to make cycling safer, city transportation director Jerry Dobrovolny said Wednesday.

Those alternatives could range from full separated bike lanes similar to the Hornby and Dunsmuir lanes to painted bike lanes and traffic-calming measures. Public consultations will begin this fall.

“I haven’t suggested a design, but separation is one of the many options on the table, as well as wider sidewalks and traffic-calming,” Dobrovolny said. “We want to see what we can do to improve cycling connections to the Commercial [Drive] area. That will be the discussion with businesses and neighbours.”

But the idea is meeting with mixed reviews, with businesses along Commercial Drive worried about the impacts.

Robert D’Onofrio, manager of Commercial Drive’s Kalena’s Shoes, said separated bike lanes wouldn’t work on the street because it isn’t wide enough and its sidewalks are already too narrow. Painted bike lanes, he said, wouldn’t be “as much of a problem, but if they do what they do downtown with separated lanes — we don’t have the width for that.”

Meanwhile, former city councillor Peter Ladner called the city’s plan for Point Grey Road “fabulous news.”

“There are too many dangerous conflicts between cyclists, pedestrians and automobiles on Point Grey Road. I would say most of the neighbours are in favour of traffic-calming, at least, if not a protected lane for cyclists,” Ladner said.

The new plans come as city council on Wednesday approved five new bikeway expansions or improvements worth $3 million. Later this month the city will also issue its new Transportation 2040 long-range plan.

The pieces approved Wednesday will see the construction of a one-block separated bike lane on Cambie Street near the Langara Golf Course, the twinning of a pedestrian trail along 58th Avenue, the conversion of a pilot bikeway on 45th Avenue into a permanent one, a north-south bikeway on Dumfries Street, a revised North Arm Trail bikeway and improvements to the Adanac bikeway at Union Street and Hawks Avenue. Most of the projects involve traffic-calming measures such as bump-out curbs, raised pedestrian walkways, traffic circles and new traffic signals. A few involve complete closures of streets. And in the case of 45th Avenue, the city is removing temporary traffic diverters that unexpectedly caused motorists to take a short cut through a school zone.

The projects finish out a $25-million investment in biking infrastructure the Vision Vancouver council approved in 2010. The city has another $10 million in improvements planned between now and 2014 that were approved in the 2011 capital plan.

But now, as the city puts the final touches on its new Transportation 2040 long-range plan, it has signalled even more improvements for cyclists are on the way. Dobrovolny said Wednesday’s proposed changes are a reaction to pressure from neighbours along Point Grey Road and Commercial Drive, which are among the busiest cycle routes in the city.

Bikes represent 12 per cent of all vehicle trips on Commercial, and 10 per cent on Point Grey.

That traffic has resulted in an increasing number of accidents involving motorized vehicles. Between 2006 and 2010 there were six accidents on Commercial Drive at each intersection at Broadway and 10th Ave. Over the same period, there were 10 bike-vehicle accidents on Cornwall at the west end of Burrard Bridge, and another six on Cornwall at Cypress Street. Like Commercial Drive, Point Grey Road is bracketed by existing bikeways on three sides.

Although the plan calls for the city to consult the public on options this fall, Commercial Drive’s D’Onofrio worries about the impact on traffic if separated lanes are chosen.

“If they have a separate lane for bikes, traffic will come to a standstill,” the store manager said.

He added separated bike lanes would also exacerbate what is already the biggest problem facing Commercial Drive merchants — the lack of parking.

But Jordan Allen of Continental Coffee said that as a cyclist he would support improvements that would enhance biking on Commercial Drive. “Personally, I would love it. But I don’t know whether parking would be affected. And I don’t know if there is enough room. If they could keep the parking and still incorporate a bike lane, that would be awesome.”

Allen said Commercial Drive is a popular route for cyclists. “You see a lot of people on their bikes, especially now with the nice weather.”

Over on the west side, the existing Third Avenue bikeway isn’t well planned or used, said Ladner, and as a result cyclists prefer to use Point Grey Road.

“You just have to see what people do. Cyclists would rather risk their lives on Point Grey Road than go up to Third Avenue,” he said.

This fall the city also expects to move head with the long-planned Helmcken/Comox bikeway in the West End. In 2010 the city said it would entail a series of traffic-calmed areas conducive to walking and cycling.

But the city’s Dobrovolny on Wednesday raised the spectre that parts of the streets could be closed or a new separated lane built, based on feedback the city received during public consultations.

“What we will bring out [this fall] is a couple of design options that range from separation to closure to various types of traffic-calming,” he said.

Historic landing a success

By Jerome Lessard, The Intelligencer

CFB TRENTON – It might not have been the best known aircraft in Canada, but the last operational Boeing 720 in the world made history here Wednesday.

The red and white aircraft C-FETB — the 154th and last 720 built by Pratt & Whitney Canada — marked the end of the fleet’s legacy by travelling from Saint-Hubert, QC to Canada’s largest air base.

Around 3 p.m. dozens of people like Bancroft resident Barney Moorhouse and Trenton resident Celeste Odono standing along RCAF Road in Trenton watched closely as the now-retired C-FETB piloted by Capt. Stephen Krochenski flew over the base twice.

“I didn’t know anything about the aircraft before I read something in the newspaper that said that it would be landing here (Trenton) for a last time,” said Odono.

“My husband is military and we live just up the road, so I though I should go out and get some photos of this historic moment.”

Eager to preserve this historically significant test bed aircraft, Pratt & Whitney (the most important manufacturer of turboprop and small turbofan engines in the world) and the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa came to an agreement that will see the 720 go on loan to the National Air Force Museum of Canada (NAFMC) in Trenton “for an indefinite period of time,” said Barb Neri, public relations manager at the NAFMC.

The aircraft was officially passed over to the museum and its executive director Chris Colton and will be displayed in the museum’s airpark, beginning in July. It will be the 26th aircraft on display at NAFMC — the 21st in the outdoor airpark.

“By being displayed in our airpark (at NAFMC), the aircraft will keep telling its rich story for generations to come,” said Colton.

Introduced by Boeing in 1959, the 720 is a smaller capacity, lighter and medium-range version of the 707 — one of the most successful airliners of the 20th century. The aircraft — built in 1988 — was the 720 flying test bed operated by the Quebec-based manufacturer until 2010 and had never flown or landed in Trenton before (154 aircraft were produced from 1958 to 1967).

Krochenski, a pilot with the Quebec-based manufacturer for six years (five years on the 720), described the historic one-hour flight as “bumpy,” but fun.

“I was a bit sad for us (the crew) to think that this was our last flight with the aircraft,” said the pilot, while taking a good last look at “his” 720.

“It’s a bit sad to see it retiring, but we are happy that this two-year project in the making to donate the aircraft to the the museum (NAFMC) came through.”

Their First Meeting

The first time Gene Watson and Rhonda Vincent met to sing face to face was on the televised portion of the Grand Ole Opry.

A plane delay forced the pair to walk on LIVE TV and sing together without rehearsal, and without ever having met before that night.

After they sang the first line together, there was an instant moment of magic and admiration.

It was apparent that everyone listening was mesmerized by their unique vocal blend, and the two were awe-struck by the sound their voices made when joined in perfect harmony.

The popularity of the duets from Watson’s projects, resulted in requests for a Gene and Rhonda tour; which co-billed Gene Watson & The Farewell Party Band and Rhonda Vincent & The Rage.

Now Gene Watson and Rhonda Vincent have joined together to create a collection of the finest traditional country music that has been recorded in years!

George Jones says, ”It’s the REAL DEAL!”

“I love Gene Watson and Rhonda Vincent. Together they have created something very special. I haven’t heard country music like this in years.”

Bill Anderson says, ”It doesn’t get any better than this!”

“The first time I heard Gene Watson and Rhonda Vincent sing together, I knew it was a match made in country music heaven.”

Listen to 90 second samples from their new album
Auction Barn Jamboree 2012

August 30 – September 2, 2012
8th Annual Auction Barn Jamboree – Colborne

The year culminates Labour Day weekend with a 4 day Jamboree held at the Keeler Centre in Colborne inviting some 300 campers on the grounds as well as walk in. Weekend and daily passes for all enthusiasts. The event includes time for open mic, participants as well as professional stage shows each evening Thursday to Saturday each day ending at 1:00 a.m. and Sunday ending at 11:00p.m. A large country gospel hour Sunday morning is performed. Monday is left as a travel day for those fans to go home.

Organization is the key and capacity crowds enjoy the event. The best part about all the activities is they are run as a hobby as opposed to a business for large profits. Gary is a full time auctioneer operating Warner’s Auction Hall in Colborne. Linda is retired from her professional employment and is now enjoying this adventure as one of her hobbies. Major profits are not part of the goals and therefore keep all events affordable for everyone.

Entertainers
We welcome all country music musicians to take part in this weekend. Those wishing to participate on the main stage shows should send a resume and a CD of their talents to Gary Warner, along with and 8 X 10 picture for promotions. Also included in the package should be a list of playing dates, which you have that are open to the public so that we may attend to enjoy your performance.

When Nova Scotia designer Dennis Page was commissioned by Canada Post to design the five stamps to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking, he knew his images had to do double duty.

They had to depict the enormity of the ship, and show Halifax, which played a significant role in the Canadian rescue effort.

“At the time, the Titanic was the biggest man-made moving object on earth. That stuck with me,” he said in a video put out by Canada Post.

The postal service released five stamps Apr. 5 to celebrate the Titanic and commemorate its sinking on Apr. 15, 1912.

Four of the stamps are domestic and show different quadrants of the ship, as seen from behind as it leaves the port of Southampton in England. The fifth, an international stamp, shows a “proud” Titanic, a colour side view, against a backdrop of water and a map. It shows the port of Southampton on the right side, Halifax on the other and the Titanic’s route, in between.

Collectors will be interested in the details. On the international stamp, for example, smoke wafts out of the first three of the ship’s four smoke-stacks. The fourth served no purpose and was built for the sake of appearance.

Of the international stamp, Page used a metallic paint for the water and shadowy areas. “I wanted the feel of the North Atlantic,” he explains.

When Page and his team were designing the stamps, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic was building a Titanic model. The artist drew on it for inspiration as he recreated the details of the ship.

A limited number of the stamps were printed.

Included in the full collection are the five stamps, a stamp pane, an uncut press sheet, a souvenir sheet, prepaid postcards, an album and a coin collection envelope.

Canada Post says it hasn’t seen this much fanfare since last year’s royal wedding.

Page added stamp-design to his repertoire in 1998, when his relationship with Canada Post began. Every time a design is needed, Canada Post holds a national competition. Although Page has designed stamps before, those commemorating the Titanic are the best he’s done, he believes.

WATERLOO — What started out as an idea for solving the annoying problem of having to be home for parcel pickups has evolved into a high-tech delivery business that is ready to roll out in big cities.

After a successful trial run in Waterloo, BufferBox, a new type of community mailbox that allows people to pick up parcels at any time of the day or night, plans to expand into Toronto this summer.

BufferBox Inc. founders Mike McCauley, Aditya Bali and Jay Shah have been running a successful parcel delivery kiosk at the University of Waterloo Student Life Centre. Now the UW grads, plus new employee Bradley Moggach, are ready to set up a network of BufferBox kiosks in Toronto, to be located in subway stations and other locations where there is 24-hour pedestrian traffic.

“We will soon be closing a round of financing, and that will really help us accelerate our launch in Toronto,” McCauley says. “By the end of the year, we hope to have 20 locations in Toronto.”

After Toronto, the company hopes to set up kiosks in other large Canadian cities.

BufferBox has come a long way since its inception in 2010 as a fourth-year mechatronics engineering project aimed at solving an annoying parcel delivery problem. University students get numerous parcels, but they are rarely home to receive them. After several failed parcel delivery attempts, they have to make their way to a far-flung depot to retrieve it.

That led to the idea for a “community mailbox meets ATM machine” for parcel delivery. The students won several big entrepreneurial contests for the concept and prototype. After they graduated last year, they immediately launched the company.

The original idea was to partner with big delivery companies, such as Canada Post and FedEx. But in speaking to people in those organizations, McCauley and his team were encouraged to prove their concept first.

“It takes a long time for big corporations to adopt a technology like this so, we are keeping in contact with them. But right now we are focusing on developing our core technology, executing on our plan, getting into Toronto and creating some traction,” McCauley says. “Eventually, maybe Canada Post or FedEx will want to do something with us.”

In January, the enterprising students set up an 11-compartment BufferBox kiosk in UW’s Student Life Centre. They have delivered more than 700 parcels at the kiosk.

You sign up for BufferBox at the company’s website and use PayPal to buy credits to pay for parcels you want delivered to a BufferBox kiosk. Your parcels then get directed to a BufferBox delivery address. When the parcels arrive at the kiosk, you get an email that contains a randomly-generated pin code. You go to the kiosk at your convenience, type in the pin code and retrieve the parcel.

“With the deliveries we have done so far, we have had zero issues with security,” McCauley says. BufferBox kiosks will be in highly visible locations, such as subway stations and university student centres, making it difficult for anyone to attempt to break into the compartments, he says.

“We’ve tried to achieve a balance of security and flexibility.”

The company is integrating its system with e-retailers who are interested in developing a simpler way for people to get their products when they shop online.

For example, UW’s bookstore has allowed students to select the BufferBox delivery option as part of its online ordering system. “That worked really well for students who want their books delivered,” McCauley says. “It was a great experience for us in testing out e-retailer integration. When we move into Toronto and integrate it with other e-retailers, we will have this experience under our belts.”

The Toronto kiosks will contain as many as 52 compartments and have a more sophisticated touchpad screen for entering the pin code and for giving customers information. The original UW site will also get a bigger kiosk.

The prototype was manufactured in China, but with more kiosks in the works, the team has shifted to a local manufacturer to produce the steel boxes. “With the higher volume, it was actually cheaper to use an Ontario manufacturer and we get a much faster turnaround,” McCauley says.

The company will partner with Toronto-based courier companies to get parcels to the kiosks. “These smaller delivery companies will be able to help us with logistics side of what we are trying to do,” McCauley says.

The system has the potential to solve a lot of problems, for both customers and retailers, he says.

“From the customer perspective, you can have anytime pickup. You also get an email so you know that you have a parcel waiting for you, as opposed to going home and finding a failed delivery notice.”

From the retailers’ point of view, it makes e-commerce more convenient, he says.

Right now, BufferBox is set up only for receiving parcels, but McCauley envisions that with more advanced automation systems it could also be used for sending out parcels. “That’s where we hope we can partner with corporations like Canada Post or FedEx,” he says.

Having the ability to send parcels back through the kiosk would be a boon for retailers, says McCauley, as one of the biggest barriers to online buying is the feeling that it is too difficult and expensive to return products.

Local dino gets minted

By DAN ILIKA Herald-Tribune staff

Updated 1 day ago

The Canadian Mint has announced a dinosaur discovered in the Peace Country almost 40 years ago will grace a collectors’ coin later this month.

The pachyrhinosaurus lakustai – discovered in 1974 by local teacher Al Lakusta – will be the first in a series of four dinosaur coins released April 16.

“Certainly it’s an exciting thing,” Lakusta said of the news. “It was totally unexpected.”

With a number of creative and significant postage stamps released over the years, Lakusta said he was surprised to learn a coin would showcase the discovery he made in the Wembley area while on a nature walk.

“It’s not something you expect to see on a coin,” he said. “I’ve seen commemorative stamps with that kind of thing but a coin – that’s really quite surprising.”

Having a dinosaur named after him in 2008 was special, according to Lakusta, but now he will be honoured with a rather unique coin.

And what makes the 25-cent coin so unique is its photo-luminescent elements.

Designed by Hungarian–Canadian palaeoartist Julius T. Csotonyi, when held in light the coin displays the artist’s rendition of what the dinosaur would have looked like when it roamed the earth thousands of years ago.

But it’s when the lights go out that makes the coin so special.

“If you take it in a dark room all of the sudden this skeleton starts to glow,” Lakusta said with a laugh.

The coin, though, is just a representation of what the Peace Country has to offer in terms of paleontological discoveries, according to Lakusta.

“The geology is such that the age of this rock is virtually unique in North America,” he said.

“We have an area of I would say roughly 200-square kilometres of this age of rock and we’re told that almost anything that comes out of here in terms of fossils is going to be quite likely a new species.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

While Lakusta said he is honoured by the name of the dinosaur and the coin, there are more important issues on his mind.

“I would be much more thrilled to see some funding come through for a museum because certainly that’s something that we need here,” Lakusta said.

The museum he referred to is the much-maligned Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum, which is still in need of some $19-million to construct the $30-million project.

“It’s quite the event to have this coin and everything associated with it,” he said. “I hope that it will bring our politicians’ attention to the fact we need some money for a museum.”

Regardless of the struggle for museum funding, Lakusta said he has already put an order in for a handful of the coins set to be released in a week’s time.

“I’ve ordered some already,” he said. “I’ve got family to take care of.”

With only 25,000 coins being minted, Lakusta said those who are looking to add one to their personal collections should act quickly.

The coins will be available through most Canada Post outlets or through the Canadian Mint.
