Highway of Hero’s Coin
Highway of Heroes coin to be launchedUnveiled at Quinte West city hall Oct. 31Posted 2 days agoErnst Kuglin Trentonian Since the start of the Afghanistan war, thousands of Canadians have stood on bridges and lined streets to watch motorcades head west on the Highway of Heroes. The motorcades include hearses carrying the remains of Canada’s war dead. Family members ride in other vehicles. To commemorate those ultimate sacrifices and the groundswell of public tribute, the Royal Canadian Mint has struck a commemorative coin. The mint will unveil the Highways of Heroes silver commemorative coin at a ceremony next Monday at Quinte West city hall in Trenton. The coin was the brainchild of QMI photojournalist Pete Fisher. He’s also the author of the recently released book Highway of Heroes, True Patriot Love. Fisher put forward his idea to the mint back in 2010. At first officials with the federal agency appeared to like the idea of striking a coin. Then Fisher was notified via e-mail the mint had a change of heart. “They basically said while sentiment behind the coin was an honourable idea, illustrating the Highway of Heroes would prove to be too difficult,” said Fisher. He launched an on-line petition and used public pressure to convince the mint otherwise. “My point was that I didn’t want people to look at the coin and start crying. From my perspective the coin is for the fallen and all those people who stood on bridges and how they paid their respect to the sacrifices that were made,” said Fisher. “I felt if the mint could recognize the 100th anniversary of a CFL football team, then it could do the same for repatriations.” But it’s all water underneath the bridge now, as Fisher puts it. “I’m really thrilled they went ahead with this. It’s the public who made this happen,” he said. He received his formal invitation in the mail a few days ago. Fisher hasn’t seen the coin, it’s been a closely guarded secret. “I’m sure it will look great and reflect what the Highway of Heroes means to a lot of people,” said Fisher. Proceeds from the sale of the coin will go towards the Afghanistan Repatriation Memorial and the Military Families Fund. The Afghan memorial will be constructed at Bain Park in Trenton. The park is just metres from the start of the Highway of Heroes. When constructed it will contain the names of every Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan. A nation-wide fundraising campaign is currently underway for the memorial. About $200,000 has been raised for the memorial. Quinte West Mayor John Williams, also the campaign chairman for the fundraiser, said it’s great the project is receiving recognition from the Mint. “It’s an extremely generous donation,” said Williams. “It will help get the word out across the country.” If the coins sell out, the memorial fundraiser and the Military Families Fund will stand to gain about $250,000 each. “That would be truly amazing,” said Williams. The unveiling ceremony begins at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 31. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, also minister responsible for the mint will be at the ceremony. In addition, James B. Love, chairman of the board of directors for the mint will be at the ceremony. A spokesperson said the mint was not in a position to make comment until Oct. 31.
Be sure to visit Loughbreeze B&B & Ontario Cycling Hostel. You will enjoy reading our earlier BLOGS from our web site about earlier Repatriation Ceremonies on various Highway of Hero’s over passes. Especially we recommend the Warkworth Legion and their White Pigeon release as the Hearse passes under the Little Lake overpass. These emotional outpourings magnify Canadians appreciation for and commitment to our military.

CFB Trenton Revisited WOW!
You may have already read some of the articles we have written about CFB Trenton and the RCAF Museum. The Trenton Air Base is a viable neighbour of ours only about 25 minutes from Loughbreeze B&B and Ontario Cycling Hostel. Believe me we love to visit this incredible museum there as it just gets better and better with refinements and NEW stuff. Just last week we were nearby attending one of those endless business meetings and we had to check out the museum. Fortunately, we had our trusty Nikon D80 to shoot pictures of some of the growing population of great aeroplanes on display. And it behoves me to tell you the staff here, mostly volunteers are helpful, courteous and knowledgeable to the extreme. Naturally we inquired about any information on Vi Milstead. We have several articles about her WW2 contributions elsewhere in these blogs. A most helpful Public relations lady followed up on our questions. Rather than offering up more written praise let me show you some of the pictures we took. Remember Loughbreeze B&B is secluded privacy in the middle of everything. Here is our special Paradise we are looking forward to seeing you. All best wishes.

Loughbreeze Surfers Love October’s Winds
April showers may bring May flowers but on the North Shore of Lake Ontario from Port Hope, Grafton, Colborne, Brighton and along Prince Edward County this October day brought out the surfers. It was one of those slightly over cast days showing a sky loaded with swiftly moving clouds, some light and some darkly ominous, right here at Loughbreeze B&B the surfers arrived.
Naturally we were already exploring our nature path and walking the shore line in spite of the occasionally shower when a bright red Toyota Home Hardware truck pulled up with several experienced boardmen in wet suits. It was a great day to surf. Mind you were are used to seeing surfers as for 25 years we have enjoyed our holiday’s on the Outer Banks, OBX, of North Carolina in the Nags Head area then turning south to marvellous Atlantic Beach.
Over the years surfers have told us “don’t worry about the weather just give us waves” and yesterday Mother Nature gave them waves. In Northumberland County Loughbreeze B&B is secluded privacy in the middle of everything. Vist us at Ontario Cycling Hostel. We are looking forward to seeing you soon.

Signs of October
Across Northumberland County there are fascinating signs of October everywhere. In Port Hope, Cobourg, Grafton, Colborne, Salem and Brighton farmers have their road side stands filled with the bountiful harvest of summer. Headed just north to Hilton, Codrington and Warkworth the scene is the same. City folks are visiting their favourite areas seeking the freshest and most beautiful fruits and veggies.
It has been a great year for the harvest. In Campbellford, Hastings, Roseneath, Castleton and Centreville the story is identical. Family farms with the pride of their labours are selling the best they have to offer. You may want to visit Baltimore, Bewedley, Garden Hill and do not miss Precious Corners to visit the many craft and antique shops that dot the country side.
For sure your visit will find welcoming friends everywhere in Northumberland Hills. Here at Loughbreeze B&B and Ontario Cycling Hostel we welcome you to our Paradise too. We are Northumberland County’s premium Lake Ontario Bed & Breakfast and the only Ontario Cycling Hostel. Secluded privacy in the middle of everything. Stop in to visit.
What the grandchildren do at the B&B?
We are at Loughbreeze B&B visiting our Grandparents. They call us their “Treasures’. We love to come and visit because here we get to play with kids from all around. We swim in the lake, swing in the hammocks and we swing and do acrobatics on the swing set. I am ‘Princess’ age 7 and my sister is ‘Pretty Girl’ age 4 1/2.
We always know the time because there are quite a few old clocks in the house. They chime all the time. Poppy turns some of them off at night so it’s quieter. Last night, we listen to the frogs chirping. Lake Ontario is very beautiful. It is nice. Sometimes we walk to the sandy beach and go swimming. This summer we have been going out in the kayak with Nana and sometimes Mommy. I love to paddle . The water is warm and it is nice and shallow. Poppy makes us great Hot Chocolate and Ice Tea. He tells us he puts in some secret ingredients but I can’t tell you what they are. Poppy and Nana tell us lots of stories and we make up stories to tell them. Sometimes we play in the Bunkie. Me and my sister make up lots of games that are fun. Visiting here is great fun. Love ’Princess’ & ’Pretty Girl’
